How We Organize

How we organize:

Nurturing an ecosystem in which all residents of Kennett Square can thrive is at the heart of Square Roots’ mission. We have a distinct vision for what contributes to thriving and that vision is largely reflected in our numerous initiatives: trails, racial healing through storytelling, hospitality, collective action to address poverty, etc. While some of these (e.g., trails, antipoverty work) are clearly not-for-profit activities, others – like the Creamery – are less clear cut. We view The Creamery as a cultural institution that builds social cohesion within the town, but the IRS views it as a for-profit business.

Nonetheless, our commitment is that the profits of the Creamery are recycled into making Kennett Square better. So, for example, when you buy a beer at The Creamery, it helps our community build a trail, supports our anti-poverty work with the Southern Chester County Opportunity Network, and funds the work of Voices Underground. As we develop other operating companies – such as a motel at the old Birch Inn – profits from these companies will also fund our non-profit community work.
